It’s a day of remembrance. Amid all the sales, cook-outs, and vacations that herald Memorial Day, it originally honored the fallen men of the Civil War—the only full-scale war fought extensively across the continental United States since the beginning of our country as a sovereign nation.

Most wars that America has fought have taken place on foreign soil. We are a blessed country with people from many nations and tribes. We are fortunate to live in a country that allows us the freedom to worship as we choose. Many American men and women have died to ensure our freedoms continue and to guarantee other people’s freedoms. This day commemorates them and acknowledges the sacrifices they and their families have made.

I started thinking about what it was like for those men and women to leave homes and families to serve. I’ve lived in the same area and very near all my family my entire life—I can’t imagine leaving all I know to go fight.

Then I thought about Jesus leaving heaven, his home, for us.

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:5-8
